It’s not a massive development, but a useful one if you wanted to use Siri somewhere you were uncomfortable talking out loud, like in a meeting. As you may have guessed, unticking the box reverts Siri to voice control. Siri can now also respond to text commands as well as spoken ones, by opening the Apple menu icon in the top left and selecting Preferences > Accessibility > Siri > Tick the Enable Type to Siri. Once you’ve finished editing the picture, the changes will be displayed in the Photos version. Note – only programs which have been updated to collaborate with Photos will be displayed. One of the most useful new features is the ability to open pictures displayed in Photos in external editing software like Photoshop by opening first the Edit With command nested under the Edits menu, and then the listed third-party app. Similarly, Selective Colour allows you to select and refine colours accurately using a dropper tool, and alter them by hue, saturation, luminance and range without affecting the rest of the image. The new Curves editing tool gives you a choice of colour pickers to pinpoint and select specific black, grey and white points in your images and adjust them subtly. You can also trim and mute Live Photos from within the same tool, and select your own thumbnail shot for each one.
GIFs are finally supported, and Live Photos – which stitches together images to create brief animations – can now be viewed as they can on iOS 11, with loop, bounce and long exposure features. The beta will begin to download, and your Mac will automatically restart once it’s ready.

While the full and final version of the operating system won’t be available to download for another few months, the experimental beta version is out now to give you an idea of what it’ll be like when it’s finished.
On first impressions, High Sierra appears to contain more subtle updates that its predecessors Sierra and Yosemite, prioritising efficiency and ease of use over flashier new features. First announced to some bemused sniggers at Apple’s annual developer’s conference WWDC last month, High Sierra is the successor to last year’s Sierra, and contains a wealth of new features focused around completing tasks and creating a better user experience. If you’re planning on buying a new Mac from September onwards, it’ll be running newest macOS, High Sierra.
